Network Disruption Affects Residential Areas and City Center

Power Outage in Oberasbach: Faulty Medium-Voltage Cable Temporarily Disconnects Districts from the Grid

A fault in the medium-voltage network temporarily paralyzed parts of Oberasbach on Wednesday afternoon. Affected were residential areas, the surroundings of the town hall, as well as several shops that had to temporarily cease operations. The disruption was also noticeable in road traffic: traffic lights failed.

Disruption and Causes

According to the energy supplier N-ERGIE, the disruption began around 4 p.m. The Linder settlement and the area around the town hall were particularly affected. The company cited a faulty medium-voltage cable on the eastern outskirts of Oberasbach as the cause.

Supply Gradually Restored

The technicians stabilized the grid through switching measures, i.e., by redirecting the supply via other routes in the distribution network. The fact that power returned temporarily in some streets and then failed again shortly after can be explained by such ongoing network switching: while sections are reconnected and checked one after another, there may be brief interruptions until the supply is fully stable again.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m., according to the company, about 80 percent of the affected households were back on the grid. At 5:53 p.m., N-ERGIE finally reported the complete restoration of supply – thus, the disruption was considered resolved.

Impact on Commerce and Traffic

The outage was not only noticeable in homes. Several shops had to close temporarily; in the town hall area, this affected, among others, a Netto supermarket and the town hall pharmacy. The simultaneous failure of traffic lights also showed how quickly a locally limited network disruption can affect public spaces and impact not only households but also local supply and traffic flow.

Contact Person in Case of Disruption – and Lessons from Crisis Preparedness

For power supply disruptions, the city of Oberasbach refers to N-ERGIE Netz GmbH as the responsible contact.

In parallel, the municipality has expanded its structures for larger, longer-lasting outages: in 2023, the city council decided that the fire stations in Oberasbach, Altenberg, and Rehdorf should serve as coordination centers for rescue operations in the event of a large-scale power outage. Emergency power supplies are also planned for this purpose – a measure intended to help maintain command and communication in an emergency, even if parts of the city are without power.

In the current case, the disruption was limited in time. However, the afternoon in Oberasbach clearly showed how quickly a single cable fault can affect several areas of life at once – from the light in the apartment to the checkout in the supermarket and the traffic light intersection.
