Regionalliga Bayern: late decision

Last-minute victory in Bayreuth: Unterhaching wins 3:2 and sends a signal in the promotion race

SpVgg Unterhaching won 3:2 (2:1) against SpVgg Bayreuth on matchday 31 of the Regionalliga Bayern. In a match with three set-piece goals and a late knockout, Alexander Winkler put the final point in the 90+8th minute – and secured three points for the promotion contender, which weigh especially heavily in the final sprint of the season.

Bayreuth, on the other hand, missed the chance to capitalize on the temporary equalizer. In the table, the club remains in twelfth place with 37 points; the cushion to the relegation places is nine points.

Bayreuth starts with force – Unterhaching turns the game before halftime

Bayreuth got off to a much better start and took an early lead: In the 4th minute, a corner landed at Deniz Koc, who got the ball in the penalty area and slotted in to make it 1:0. The scene matched the opening phase: Bayreuth looked sharp, Unterhaching needed a few minutes to get a grip.

As the game progressed, the guests stabilized – and came back through a key scene. After a handball by Alexander Seidel, the referee awarded a penalty, which Jeroen Krupa confidently converted in the 26th minute to make it 1:1. This not only gave Unterhaching composure, but also control over set pieces: Shortly before halftime, the lead came again from a dead ball. Manuel Stiefler headed in a corner in the 45th minute to make it 2:1.

The fact that Unterhaching had turned the game around by halftime was also an expression of a clear line: In a tight away game, the few, clearly structured moments – penalty and corner – were maximally exploited.

Bucher counters Unterhaching's set-piece strength with a dream volley

After the break, Bayreuth came back – and again a corner was the starting point. Unterhaching's defense initially cleared forward, but Leon Bucher reacted the fastest: From about 25 meters, he took the rebound directly and scored with a volley to make it 2:2.

Winkler scores in the 90+8th – Unterhaching rewards itself late

For a long time, it looked as if neither team would be able to force a decisive breakthrough after the 2:2. Bayreuth held firm, Unterhaching patiently looked for gaps – until stoppage time. In the 90+8th minute, Alexander Winkler scored to make it 3:2 and decided a match that remained open until the end.

For Unterhaching, this late win is more than just another three points: Such games, in which a favorite absorbs setbacks, doesn't collapse after the equalizer and still gets the last action, are often the matches that make the difference in a promotion race. Bayreuth, on the other hand, remained without reward despite strong phases – and will be especially annoyed that several set-piece situations ultimately proved decisive.
