Lukas Rietzschel reads in Ansbach from Sanditz

As part of the 30th LesArt Literature Days, Lukas Rietzschel comes to Kunsthaus R3 in Ansbach. Under the title I write to understand something for myself, the award-winning writer speaks about his writing, his literary themes, and his new novel Sanditz.

A literary panorama of contemporary East Germany

Lukas Rietzschel, born in 1994 in Räckelwitz in Eastern Saxony, is one of the defining young voices in contemporary German literature. His debut novel Mit der Faust in die Welt schlagen about the upbringing of two brothers in the Lausitz region after reunification became a bestseller and was adapted for film. With Raumfahrer, he deepened his engagement with origins, memory, and social change.

Sanditz: Family, History, and the Search for Belonging

The focus of the reading is on Rietzschel's current novel Sanditz. The multi-perspective societal novel leads into a small town in East Germany and connects the story of the Wenzel family with the life paths of numerous residents. From the end of the GDR to the most recent present, it unfolds a panorama of new beginnings and decline, friendship and family, political upheavals, and personal yearnings.

Rietzschel's style combines precise observation with a polyphonic narration. Civil rights activists, former officers, archivists, local journalists, dreamers, and people searching for a place in society create a literary mosaic. Sanditz was nominated for the longlist of the German Book Prize in 2026.

Author encounter with social relevance

The reading promises a focused encounter with an author whose literary quality arises from the combination of linguistic artistry, historical accuracy, and social observation. Rietzschel writes about Lausitz, but his questions reach far beyond: How does origin shape one's own life path? What remains from political upheavals in personal memory? And how does belonging come about in a society that is constantly changing?

His novels and plays have received, among others, the Saxon Literature Prize and the Literature Prize Text & Language. The LesArt not only offers a classical reading but also a literary experience in the current cultural discourse.

Reading atmosphere in Kunsthaus R3
