Jazz between Composition and Spontaneous Discovery
On November 20, 2026, the Kunsthaus R3 in Ansbach will transform into a resonance space for modern jazz, free improvisation, and chamber music dialogue. Uwe Kropinski on guitar and Dieter Köhnlein on piano will present their own compositions, moving between clear forms, surprising turns, and wide open improvisational spaces.
Two Musicians, a Decades-Long Dialogue
Kropinski and Köhnlein have known and played music together since 1987. Their collaboration has led to several joint albums, including By the Way, In and around C, Scratching the Silence, and Instant Stories. In the concert, matured musical experience meets fresh joy of playing.
Guitar Sound Meets Piano Tone
The music of the duo thrives on the sensitive synchronization of two independent voices. Kropinski's extraordinary guitar sound encounters Köhnlein's precise, colorful piano playing. From this connection, character pieces emerge with rhythmic energy, lyrical depth, and an orchestration that does not require a large ensemble.
Improvisation as Musical Narration
Each composition opens its own sound world. Sometimes powerful passages drive forward, while at other times quiet, almost floating moments arise. The stage performance remains close to the moment: motifs are picked up, transformed, and continued in new contexts. This openness is what makes the concert experience particularly captivating.
Jazz with Technical Mastery
Uwe Kropinski studied classical and jazz guitar at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin and has worked with numerous figures in the jazz and improvisation scene. His special features include custom-made guitars with 39 frets, as well as an expanded playing concept that incorporates the guitar body as a percussive instrument. Dieter Köhnlein is one of the defining pianists of German modern jazz and has been awarded the Cultural Promotion Prize of the City of Nuremberg and the Wolfram von Eschenbach Promotion Prize, among others.
An Evening for Curious Jazz Listeners
The concert is aimed at all who wish to experience jazz not as a rigid genre, but as a lively language. The acoustic intimacy of Kunsthaus R3 supports direct exchange between stage and audience and creates space for concentrated listening, spontaneous reactions, and intense audience mood.
The audience can expect a demanding yet accessible jazz concert full of colors, dialogues, and unexpected developments. Anyone who wants to experience improvisational music with character, technical finesse, and emotional depth live should not miss this evening at Kunsthaus R3.
